Summer Fashion in Fantasyland: Thinking Outside of the Box (of your career).

I view summertime as a period to regroup and reset. Especially since I am in school, there is a natural break between two eras. For me, I've been battling depression and summer in Atlanta was a great place to get creative with fashion. In doing so, there was no better time to maximize creativity than a themed event.

My summer in the city concluded with my dear friend Erin Tapley's 25th birthday fantasy. At this event, all things ethereal, mystical, and magical were welcome. And because I love themes so much, it is only natural that I have a prop box. A collection of eccentric pieces I share with my community. So, this party was an opportunity to share my pieces and celebrate someone that I love.

Fantasy in everyday spaces.

When getting dressed, dare to push the envelope:

  • For me, I try to bring the abstract in my mind to life. For example, if I am taking a literal approach on "fantasy," I might think princesses or dragons. When making an outfit inspired by dragons, I think of the colors, textures, and prints that embody the dragon. I think of scales and fire, and I try to emulate that with the clothes I already have. Greens, reds, oranges, leathers, and prints.

Innovate with accessories.

My close friend Rose Wagner went for a look inspired by the veils worn by women during medieval times. Although we didn't have one, I managed to wrap her hair in a white lace top, mimicking that style. Matching her jewelry, the silver clips pulled the look together.

  • Think outside the box: tie that top into a headscarf, cut the sleeves off that top, and destroy its original purpose.

Carrying Erin's magic.

As a full-time law student, it can be difficult to stand out in a space that encourages linear thinking, a specific image, and carrying yourself in a serious manner. I am passionate about my legal career, but it isn't what defines me. I am Lisa who will be a lawyer, not Lawyer Lisa. I love fashion and my creative mind. After partaking in a party that encouraged magic, I want to embody that fantasy in my fashion as I begin my final year in law school. The party was for Erin, someone who embodies authenticity and fantasy in her everyday wardrobe. Bold prints, sequins, and a dedication to shades of purple. Think less about what the stereotype your career wants you to be and embrace the fantasy in your mind. The only thing holding you back is caring about what others think.
