FRIENDS. FASHION. FUN.

A couple weeks ago was my law school’s semi-formal dance. Events, like this one, serve as a reminder to pause, take a break, and enjoy the people around you. Because sooner than later, we will all be in different places, beginning our careers.
For bigger events, I usually plan my outfit weeks in advance; this year, I wanted something new, but affordable. I chose a fourteen dollar dress: light-blue, with a drop waist, and a ruffled dress. I styled it with ten-dollar, thrifted heels. And like a kid before the first day of school, my dress laid on my desk all week, ready to go to the dance.

When I plan my outfit in advance, I have more time to help my friends the week leading up to the event. This year, a few of my friends were still in the process of deciding what they would wear for the dance. So, I left a bag of nine dresses in my locker. Throughout the week, people grabbed the dresses they wanted, and returned whatever they decided not to wear. Sharing clothes is one of the ways I connect with my friends. It is one thing I can do to express my love and be there for them because my friends have helped me in ways I could have never imagined.
Beyond my friends, I love seeing what people choose to wear for something like this. When a special occasion comes around, each attendee shows up in their own way, expressing themselves in some capacity. Whether that is wearing a dress or suit you already own, something borrowed from a friend, or something brand new, you are communicating something to the world. expressing yourself in some capacity.
For law students specifically, an event like a semi-formal is an opportunity to put your busy life on pause to dress up and be with your friends. For the first-year students, it's an opportunity to connect with the new people in your life. For third-year students, like myself, it is one of the few remaining moments where your friends for life can all be together. Soon, you won’t have as many opportunities to dress up, hang out, and do whatever you want for one evening. After nights like these, you’ll always remember that dress or suit as the one you wore at your last law school semi-formal.
So while you’re at this stage, seize the moment and wear something that might be out of your comfort zone. Maximize the way you express yourself before you’re forever in a career that has a say in how you dress. Wear the thrifted dress, brand-new heels, a Georgia bow-tie, and racoon hat if you choose to. Express your magic as much as possible.
I enjoyed the dance so much, I forgot to document the fashion I saw. So, below are some of the dresses I offered to share with my friends. A dress I wore at last year’s semi, two dresses gifted to me, and a dress I thrifted for ten dollars.
